Ruth

1.1 And it came to pass in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the plains of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

1.2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. and the Moabites came and dwelt there.

1.3 And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons.

1.4 And they took unto them wives of the daughters of Maab. the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth. and they dwelt there about ten years.

1.5 And both of them died, both of them, and the woman was left with her two children and her wife.

1.6 And she arose and her companions, and returned from the fields of Moab. for she had heard in the country of Moab that the LORD had visited his people to give them bread.

1.7 And she went out from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

1.8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go and take a wife for your mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with the living.

1.9 May the Lord give you a wife and a house of rest, and may you mourn for them, and may you lift up your voice and weep.

1.10 And they said unto her, We will return with thee unto thy people.

1.11 And Naomi said unto her, Why call my daughter my people? for I have yet sons in my womb, and they shall be your people.

1.12 I have given birth to a son, for I am too old to have a husband. For I said, "There is hope for me; tonight I will have a husband, and I will also bear sons."

1.13 Let them be broken until they grow up; let them be anchored, that no man may be my daughter. for I am very bitter against you, because the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.

1.14 And she lifted up her voice, and wept again. and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, and Ruth clave unto her.

1.15 And she said, Behold, thy daughter-in-law is returned unto her people, and unto her gods. return after thy daughter-in-law.

1.16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, to return from following after thee. for whither thou goest I will go, and where I lodge, thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.

1.17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if death separates you and me.

1.18 And he saw that she was eager to go with him, and he ceased speaking to her.

1.19 And they went both of them until they came to Beth-lehem. and it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, This is Naomi.

1.20 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi; call me Mara; for bitterness is enough for me.

1.21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why do you call me Naomi? The Lord has answered me, and my heart is troubled.

1.22 And Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, which returned out of the country of Moab. and they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the shekel harvest.

2.1 And Naomi found a mighty man of valor, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.

2.2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean among the sheaves among whom I may find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.

2.3 And she went and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers. and the lot of the field happened to belong to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

2.4 And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they said unto him, The LORD bless thee.

2.5 And Boaz said unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this?

2.6 And the young man that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitess that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab.

2.7 And she said, Gather now, I pray thee, that I may gather sheaves after the reapers. And she came and stood from the morning until now, and hast tarried a little in the house.

2.8 And Boaz said unto Ruth, Hast thou not heard, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither pass ye by this, that ye may cleave unto my maid?

2.9 Your eyes are on the field where they are reaping, and you have followed them. Did I not command the young men not to touch you? And you fasted, and went to the vessels, and drank what the young men drew.

2.10 And she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why hast thou found grace in thine eyes, to know me, seeing I am a stranger?

2.11 And Boaz answered and said unto her, Tell me, I pray thee, all that thou hast done unto thy mother-in-law after the death of thine husband, how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy kindred, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.

2.12 The LORD reward you for your work, and may your reward be complete from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

2.13 And she said, I have found favor in your sight, my lord, for you have comforted me, and because you have spoken kindly to your handmaid, I will not be like one of your handmaids.

2.14 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime bring forth corn, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the leaven, and sit by the reapers. and she plucked up corn for herself, and did eat, and was filled, and had some left.

2.15 And she arose to glean. and Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Glean also among the sheaves, and spare not her.

2.16 And if you give her some of the tongs, and she leaves, and you gather it, and you do not rebuke her.

2.17 And she gleaned in the field until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned, and it was as the sheaves of a door.

2.18 And she took it, and came into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned, and she went out, and gave her that which was left of the seven shekels.

2.19 And her mother-in-law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where hast thou done? blessed be thy acquaintance. And she told her mother-in-law what she had done to him, and said, The name of the man with whom I did this day is Boaz.

2.20 And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Blessed be the LORD, who hath not forsaken his kindness toward the living and the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is nigh unto us, he is our redeemer.

2.21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, Because he said unto me, Thou shalt keep fast with my young men, until they have finished all my harvest.

2.22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is well, my daughter, that thou go out with his young women, that they meet thee not in another field.

2.23 And she kept fast unto the damsels of Boaz to glean until the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest, and she restored her mother-in-law.

3.1 And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

3.2 And now, behold, Boaz, our lord, whose maids were, behold, he hath cast out the sheaves of the gates tonight.

3.3 And thou shalt wash thyself, and anoint thyself, and put on thy raiment, and go down to the threshingfloor. make no man know it, until he be finished eating and drinking.

3.4 And it shall come to pass, when he lieth down, that thou shalt know the place where he lieth down. and thou shalt come and uncover his feet, and lie down with him, and he shall tell thee what thou shalt do.

3.5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest I will do.

3.6 And she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law had commanded her.

3.7 And Boaz did eat and drink, and his heart was merry. and he came to lie down at the end of the heap. and she came and uncovered him from his feet, and lay down.

3.8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself, and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

3.9 And he said, Who art thou? And she said, I am Ruth thy handmaid. and thou hast turned thy back upon thy handmaid; for thou art a redeemer.

3.10 And he said, Blessed be the LORD, my daughter. thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, in that thou hast not followed after the young men, whether poor or rich.

3.11 And now, my daughter, fear not, whatsoever thou sayest, I will do unto thee. for all the gates of my people know that thou art a valiant woman.

3.12 And now, if indeed I am a redeemer, and there is a redeemer nearer than I,

3.13 I will spend the night with you, and in the morning if he will redeem you, well, he will redeem you; but if he will not redeem you, I will redeem you, as the LORD liveth; lie down until the morning.

3.14 And she lay at his feet until the morning, and rose up before one knew his neighbor, and said, Let him not know that the woman came to the threshing floor.

3.15 And he said, Take the kerchief that is upon thee, and hold it. And she held it. And he measured six gates, and sat upon them, and entered into the city.

3.16 And she came to her mother-in-law, and said, Who is my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

3.17 And she said, These six gates gave he me, because he said, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.

3.18 And she said, Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will fall. for the man will not hold his peace, except the matter be finished this day.

4.1 And Boaz went up to the gate, and sat down there. and, behold, the redeemed man passed by, whom Boaz spake of, and said, Arise, and come hither, so and so, and I will be a widow. And he went and sat down.

4.2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit down here. and they sat down.

4.3 And he said unto Gaal, The parcel of ground which belonged to our brother Elimelech, which Naomi, which returned out of the country of Moab, sold.

4.4 And I said, I will reveal to you, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. if you will redeem, redeem it; and if not, tell me, that I may know that there is none besides you to redeem, and I am after you. And he said, I will redeem it.

4.5 And Boaz said, On the day that thou boughtest the field of the hand of Naomi, I also bought it of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to perpetuate the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

4.6 And the redeemer said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine inheritance. redeem thou my redeemer for thyself; for I cannot redeem it.

4.7 And this was before in Israel concerning redemption and exchange, to fulfill all things. every man took off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour. and this was the record in Israel.

4.8 And the redeemer said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. and he drew off his shoe.

4.9 And Boaz said unto the elders and all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Elimelech's, of the hand of Naomi.

4.10 Also Ruth the Maabite, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to establish the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place. ye are witnesses this day.

4.11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, The LORD make the woman that cometh into thine house like Rachel and like Rachel, which both built the house of Israel. and he did great things in Ephrathah, and called the name thereof Bethlehem.

4.12 And your house shall be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give you of this young woman.

4.13 And Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. and he went in unto her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.

4.14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, who hath not left thee a redeemer this day, and that his name may be famous in Israel.

4.15 And you shall be a restorer of life, and a provider of your restoration, for your daughter-in-law, whom you love, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.

4.16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and was a nurse unto him.

4.17 And the women of that place called him, saying, A son is born to Naomi. and she called his name Obed. he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

4.18 And these are the generations of Perez. Perez begat Hezron,

4.19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,

4.20 And Aminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Solomon,

4.21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,

4.22 And Ebed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David,
