Jonah 1.1 Now the word of YHVH came to Jonah the son of Ammi, saying, 1.2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before me. 1.3 And Jonah arose to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of YHVH, and went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish. and he paid her fare, and went down in it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of YHVH. 1.4 And YHVH hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a great tempest in the sea, so that the ship threatened to be broken up. 1.5 And the sailors were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast down the stuff that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten them from off them. and Jonah went down into the stern of the ship, and lay down, and slept. 1.6 And the captain of the guard came near unto him, and said unto him, What aileth thee? Arise, call upon thy Alhym. peradventure Alhym will be gracious unto us, and we perish not. 1.7 And they said one to another, Go, and let us cast lots, that we may know in peace what evil this is unto us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 1.8 And they said unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, whose evil is this unto us? What is thy work? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and what people art thou of? 1.9 And he said unto them, Go thy way, and I will fear YHVH Alhym of heaven, which made the sea and the dry land. 1.10 And the men were exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What hast thou done? for the men knew that he fled from the presence of YHVH, because he had told them. 1.11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us. for the sea is growing rough. 1.12 And he said unto them, Lift me up, and cast me into the sea; and the sea shall be quiet from you. for I know that this great tempest is upon you. 1.13 And the men tried hard to get back to land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them. 1.14 And they cried unto YHVH, and said, O YHVH, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, neither lay we innocent blood upon us. for thou, O YHVH, hast done as it pleased thee. 1.15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him into the sea. and the sea ceased from its raging. 1.16 And the people feared YHVH exceedingly, and offered sacrifices unto YHVH, and made vows. 2.1 And YHVH prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 2.2 Then Jonah prayed to YHVH his Alhym from the belly of the fish. 2.3 And he said, I cried out in my distress unto YHVH, and out of the belly of Sheol he answered me. I cried aloud, thou hast heard my voice. 2.4 And you cast me into the depths of the seas, and the river shall compass me about. all your waves and your billows shall pass over me. 2.5 And I said, I am cast out from before thy face. yet will I look again toward thy holy temple. 2.6 Waters have covered me to the very soul; the deep has surrounded me with a shroud wrapped around my head. 2.7 I went down to the mountains, the earth, fleeing from me forever, and the destruction of my life came up from YHVH my Alhym. 2.8 When my soul was overwhelmed within me, I remembered YHVH, and my prayer came to you toward your holy temple. 2.9 Those who guard the vain things will abandon their kindness. 2.10 And I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving, which I have vowed, I will fulfill my vows to YHVH. 2.11 And YHVH spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. 3.1 And the word of YHVH came unto Jonah the second time, saying, 3.2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the proclamation that I am telling you. 3.3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of YHVH. Now Nineveh was a great city, a three-day walk. 3.4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey. and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. 3.5 And the people of Nineveh believed in Alhym, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 3.6 And the word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid aside his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 3.7 And he proclaimed and proclaimed in Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything, let them not feed, nor let them drink water. 3.8 And man and beast covered themselves with sackcloth, and cried mightily unto Alhym, and returned every man from his evil way, and from the violence that was in their hands. 3.9 Who knows whether Alhym will turn and comfort us, and turn from his fierce anger, and we shall not perish? 3.10 And Alhym saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. and Alhym repented of the evil, which he had said he would do unto them; but he did it not. 4.1 And it grieved Jonah greatly, and he was wroth. 4.2 And he prayed unto YHVH, and said, Where is YHVH? Was not this my word while I was yet upon my own land? Therefore I fled to Tarshish. for I knew that thou art a gracious and merciful Alhym, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest of the evil. 4.3 And now, O YHVH, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live. 4.4 And YHVH said, The good is come unto thee. 4.5 And Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and made him a booth there, and sat under it in the shade, until he should see what would become of the city. 4.6 And YHVH Alhym prepared a gourd, and it came up over the dove to be a shade over his head, to deliver him from the evil. and dove rejoiced greatly over the gourd. 4.7 And Alhym prepared a worm at the rising of the morning the next day, which smote the gourd, and it withered. 4.8 And it came to pass, when the sun rose, that Alhym prepared a gentle east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and desired for himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. 4.9 And Alhym said unto Jonah, It is well that thou art angry with the gourd. And he said, It is well that thou art angry with me unto death. 4.10 And YHVH said, Thou hast spared the gourd, which thou hast not laboured for, nor made it grow. which was a night's growth, and a night's growth perished. 4.11 And I will not spare Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than twelve thousand men who do not know their right hand from their left, and much cattle.
