Amos
1.1 The words of Amos, who was of the tribe of Nicodemus, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
1.2 And YHVH said, He will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem. and the pleasant places of the fields shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
1.3 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof. and for threshing Gilead with threshing instruments of iron.
1.4 And I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.
1.5 And I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of On, and the supporter of the tribe from the house of Eden, and the exiles of Aram Kir, saith YHVH.
1.6 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; for the captivity of Solomon, to deliver up the whole captivity into the hand of Edom.
1.7 And I sent a fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it devoured the palaces thereof.
1.8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and the supporter of the tribe from Ashkelon, and I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith YHVH GOD.
1.9 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of the wicked, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof. because they delivered up all their captivity to Edom, and remembered not the covenant of brethren.
1.10 And I sent fire upon the narrow wall, and it devoured the palaces thereof.
1.11 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof. because he pursued his brethren with the sword, and provoked them to anger, and devoured them for ever. and his iniquity shall be for ever.
1.12 And I sent a fire upon Yemen, and it devoured the palaces of the afflicted.
1.13 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof, that he might enlarge their border.
1.14 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof with a blast in the day of battle, with a storm in the day of the whirlwind.
1.15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith YHVH.
2.1 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof. because they burned the bones of the king of Edom for a prey.
2.2 And I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of the cities. and Moab shall die in the tumult, with the sound of the trumpet.
2.3 And I will cut off the judge from her midst, and I will slay all her princes with him, saith YHVH.
2.4 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof. they have not kept the law of YHVH, nor his statutes; but they shall stumble in their lies, which their fathers walked in.
2.5 And I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
2.6 Thus saith YHVH; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof. for the righteous man sold his vineyard for silver, and the poor man for shoes.
2.7 Those who seek the dust of the earth will turn their backs on the poor and the humble, and a man and his father will go to the virgin, to profane my holy name.
2.8 And they shall lie down in sackcloth beside every altar, and drink wine of the afflicted in the house of their God.
2.9 And I destroyed the Amorites before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and whose height was like the height of the oaks. and I destroyed their fruit from above, and their roots from beneath.
2.10 And I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorites.
2.11 And I will raise up of your sons for prophets, and of your chosen ones for the Gentiles. is it not so, O children of Israel, saith YHVH?
2.12 And you gave the Nazarites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, You shall not prophesy.
2.13 Behold, I will oppress you as a cart full of grain is oppressed.
2.14 And the weak shall perish from flight, and the strong shall not exert his strength, and the mighty shall not deliver his soul.
2.15 And he that handleth the bow shall not stand, neither shall he that is swift of foot escape, neither shall he that rideth on the horse save his life.
2.16 And he that is bold in his heart among the mighty shall flee naked in that day, saith YHVH.
3.1 Hear this word which YHVH hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, concerning the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying,
3.2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth. therefore will I bring upon you all your iniquities.
3.3 Two men walk together unless they are destined.
3.4 A lion roars in the forest, and has no prey; he will not let his voice escape him, except he take a prey.
3.5 A bird is sweet upon the earth's snare, and there is no snare for it; it will raise a snare from the earth, and no snare will catch it.
3.6 If a trumpet be blown in a city, and the people be not afraid, if there be evil in the city, and YHVH hath not done it.
3.7 For YHVH GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
3.8 A lion has roared, who will not fear YHVH GOD? Who will not prophesy?
3.9 They proclaimed it against the palaces of Ashdod, and against the palaces of the land of Egypt, saying, Gather yourselves together upon the mountains of Samaria, and see great tumult within it, and oppressed within it.
3.10 And they know not what to do in the presence of YHVH, saith he that layeth up violence and deceit in their palaces.
3.11 Therefore thus saith YHVH GOD; I will compass the land round about, and I will bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be desolate.
3.12 Thus saith YHVH. As a man delivereth out of the mouth of a lion two knees, or a piece of an ear. so shall the children of Israel that dwell in Samaria be delivered from the mouth of a bed, and in Damascus a bed.
3.13 Hear and testify in the house of Jacob, says YHVH GOD of hosts.
3.14 For in the day that I visited the transgressions of Israel upon him, and I visited the altars of Beth-el, the horns of the altar were cut off, and fell to the ground.
3.15 And I will smite the winter house with the summer house. and the houses of ivory shall perish, and many houses shall be destroyed, saith YHVH.
4.1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, which are on Mount Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say to their masters, Bring and drink.
4.2 YHVH GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, behold, the days come upon you, that he will carry you away in ships, and after you in fishing boats.
4.3 And a woman shall go forth against her, and cast out the harlot, saith YHVH.
4.4 They came to Bethel and transgressed against Gilgal, they multiplied transgression, and brought in the morning your sacrifices for three days, your tithes.
4.5 And burn leavened bread, and cry for alms, and make it heard. for so love ye, O children of Israel, saith YHVH GOD.
4.6 And I gave you two years of famine in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places; and you did not return to me, says YHVH.
4.7 And I also withheld the rain from you for three months to the harvest, and I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city. one piece of land shall rain, and the piece where it rained not shall wither.
4.8 And two or three cities shall wander to one city to drink water, and shall not be satisfied, neither shall they return, saith YHVH.
4.9 I will smite you with blasting and blasting in abundance. your gardens, and your vineyards, and your fig trees, and your olive trees, the locust shall devour them. and ye shall not return unto me, saith YHVH.
4.10 I will send a word against you by the way of Egypt. I will kill your young men with the sword, and take away your horses, and I will set fire to your camps and to your houses; and you will not return, saith YHVH.
4.11 I will overthrow you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah; and you shall be as the shadow of a burning bush, and you shall not return to me, saith YHVH.
4.12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel. for thus will I do unto thee, prepare thyself before thy God, O Israel.
4.13 For behold, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is in the wilderness. he maketh the morning to shine, and to tread upon the high places of the earth. YHVH God of hosts is his name.
5.1 Hear this word which I take up against you, O house of Israel.
5.2 The virgin of Israel has fallen, she will rise no more; she is abandoned on her land, no one will raise her up.
5.3 For thus saith YHVH GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that went out by a hundred shall leave ten, unto the house of Israel.
5.4 For thus saith YHVH unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and live.
5.5 And seek not Beth-el, and enter not into Gilgal, and pass not over to Beer-sheba. for Gilgal shall be utterly destroyed, and Beth-el shall be destroyed.
5.6 Seek YHVH and live, lest he break forth like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour the house of El, and none can quench it.
5.7 Those who turn to wormwood have left judgment and righteousness in the land.
5.8 He made a tumult and a fool, and turned the morning into darkness, and the day into night, which called for the waters of the sea, and poured them out upon the face of the earth. YHVH is his name.
5.9 He who restrains a demon against a goat and a demon against a fortress will come
5.10 They hate a reprover in the gate, and abominate a blameless word.
5.11 Therefore, because you are ashamed of the poor and the burden of the barren land, you have taken from it houses of wood, but you have built them, and you have not lived in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you have not drunk their wine.
5.12 For I know that your transgressions are many, and your sins are great. you have oppressed the righteous in the wilderness, and the poor in the gate.
5.13 Therefore the wise man will be careful at that time, for it is an evil time.
5.14 Seek good and avoid evil, that you may live. And so it shall be with you, O LORD, the God of hosts, as you have said.
5.15 Hate evil, love good, and set forth judgment in the gate. it may be that YHVH God of hosts will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
5.16 Therefore thus saith YHVH God of hosts; In every street shall there be mourning, and in every street shall they say, Aha, aha, and they shall call the mourner to mourn, and the mourner to know the way.
5.17 And in every vineyard there is lamentation, for I will pass through thee, saith YHVH.
5.18 Woe to you who desire the day of YHVH! Why is the day of YHVH to you like darkness and not light?
5.19 As a man flees from a lion, and a bear attacks him, and comes into the house, and leans his hand on the wall, and a serpent bites him,
5.20 Is not the day of YHVH darkness, and not light? and darkness, and no light shall shine upon it?
5.21 I have hated, I have abhorred your feasts, and I will not abide in your feasts.
5.22 For if you offer me a burnt offering and your offerings, I will not accept them, nor will I look upon your offerings.
5.23 Take away from me the multitude of your songs, and I will not hear your harpists.
5.24 And let justice flow down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.
5.25 You offered me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel.
5.26 And you took up the tabernacle of your king, and the image of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.
5.27 And I will carry you away into exile beyond Damascus, saith YHVH, the God of hosts, whose name is
6.1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in Mount Samaria, the chief of the nations, and the house of Israel shall come unto them!
6.2 Pass over Calnath and see, and go from there to Hamath Rabbah, and go down to Gath, the Philistines, the best of these kingdoms, if their border is greater than yours.
6.3 Those who are sanctified for a bad day and who are prepared for the Sabbath of the devil
6.4 Who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the fat of the flock, and calves out of the stalls.
6.5 The details according to the harp, as David thought, were instruments of song.
6.6 They who drink wine with bowls and anoint themselves with the firstfruits of oils, and do not partake of the spoil of Joseph.
6.7 Therefore now they shall be found at the head of the waves, and the head of the winepress shall be found at the head of the winepress.
6.8 As YHVH GOD hath sworn by his soul, saith YHVH God of hosts, I will surely abhor the excellency of Jacob, and his palaces; I will destroy the city, and all that is therein.
6.9 And it shall come to pass, if ten men die in one house,
6.10 And his uncle took him up, and went to fetch him out of the house, and said unto him that was in the house, Is there yet with thee? And he said, Nay, and said, Hesit, for the name of YHVH is not mentioned.
6.11 For behold, YHVH has commanded, and he will strike the great house with fragments, and the little house with breaches.
6.12 The desire for horses is like a rock, if it is plowed in the mornings. For you have become the head of justice, and the fruit of righteousness is like wormwood.
6.13 Those who rejoice in vain, who say, "Have we not by our own strength taken us horns?"
6.14 For, behold, I will raise up against you, house of Israel, saith YHVH God of hosts, a nation, and will oppress you from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of the Arabah.
7.1 Thus showed I YHVH GOD, and, behold, I made my back at the beginning of the rising of the chaff, and, behold, chaff followed the king's fatness.
7.2 And it came to pass, when she had made an end of eating the grass of the land, that she said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I pray thee, who shall rise up against Jacob? for he is little.
7.3 YHVH be pleased with this, it shall not be so, saith YHVH.
7.4 Thus YHVH GOD showed me, and, behold, YHVH GOD called for Rabbah with fire, and it devoured the great deep, and devoured the portion.
7.5 And he said, O Lord GOD, cease, I pray thee, who shall rise up in Jacob? for he is small.
7.6 YHVH relents concerning this also, it shall not be, saith YHVH GOD.
7.7 Thus shewed I, and, behold, my Lord stood upon the wall of Anak, and Anak in his hand.
7.8 And YHVH said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, Here am I. And he said, Behold, I am there in the midst of my people Israel. I will no more pass over him.
7.9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be desolate. and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
7.10 And Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel. the land is not able to bear all his words.
7.11 For thus says Amos. Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall go into exile from its land.
7.12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, "See, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there."
7.13 And the house of God shall no more prophesy. for it is the king's temple, and it is the house of the kingdom.
7.14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, I am no prophet, neither am I the son of a prophet. but I am a morning, and the morning is a day.
7.15 And YHVH took me from following the sheep, and YHVH said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
7.16 And now hear the word of YHVH, saying, Prophesy not against Israel, nor preach against the house of Isaac.
7.17 Therefore thus saith YHVH; Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line, and thou shalt die in an unclean land. and Israel shall go into captivity out of his land.
8.1 Thus showed I YHVH GOD, and behold, a summer house
8.2 And Amos said, What seest thou? And I said, A summer den. And YHVH said, The end is come unto me, and the end is come unto my people Israel. I will no more pass by them.
8.3 And they shall sing the service of the sanctuary in that day, saith YHVH GOD. the multitude of the carcasses in every place shall be cast down.
8.4 Hear this, you who oppress the poor and oppress the afflicted of the land.
8.5 Saying, When shall the new moon be past, and the sabbath be broken, and the sabbath be opened, to make the shekel small, and to make it great, and the scales of deceit?
8.6 To buy with money the poor and needy for shoes, and a broken bar to break.
8.7 YHVH hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, if I forget for ever all their works,
8.8 For this the land shall not be moved, and all that dwell therein shall mourn. and it shall go up as a bride's lamp, and shall be driven out, and shall be burned as the lamp of Egypt.
8.9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith YHVH GOD, that I will cause the sun to fall at noon, and will darken the land in the daytime.
8.10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring sackcloth upon every loin, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as a single mourning, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
8.11 Behold, the days come, saith YHVH GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of YHVH.
8.12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of YHVH, and shall not find it.
8.13 In that day the beautiful virgins and the young men will faint from thirst.
8.14 Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, and say, "Your God lives, Dan, and lives in the way of Beersheba," will fall and never rise again.
9.1 I saw YHVH standing by the altar, and he said, “This is the key.” And the thresholds shook, and I struck them down at the head of all of them, and I will kill the last of them with the sword. No one escaped or escaped.
9.2 If they dig into Sheol, from there I will take them; and if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.
9.3 And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, thence will I search and take them. and though they hide themselves from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
9.4 And if they go into captivity before their enemies, from thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them. and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.
9.5 And YHVH, YHVH of hosts, toucheth the land, and it shall wax pale, and all that dwell therein shall mourn. and it shall rise up as the brightness of the winter, and shall set down as the brightness of Egypt.
9.6 He who builds his tower in the heavens and establishes it on the earth, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth, YHVH is his name.
9.7 Are ye not as the children of Kashim unto me, O children of Israel, saith YHVH? Did I not bring up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines out of Keturah, and the Syrians out of the city?
9.8 Behold, the eyes of YHVH GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. surely I will not destroy the house of Jacob, saith YHVH.
9.9 For, behold, I command, and will shake the house of Israel among all nations, as one shakes a bundle, and not a clod of earth shall fall.
9.10 All the sins of my people shall die by the sword, who say, "You shall not bring evil before us, nor shall evil come before us."
9.11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and will close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up the ruins, and build it as in the days of old.
9.12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations upon whom my name is called, saith YHVH, do this.
9.13 Behold, the days come, saith YHVH, that the forest shall be cut down, and the vine shall be cut down, and the vine shall be cut down, and the mountains shall drop honey, and all the hills shall rejoice.
9.14 And I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel, and they shall build pleasant cities, and dwell therein, and plant vineyards, and drink their wine, and make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
9.15 And I will plant them in their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith YHVH thy God.
